3rd World Congress of Science and Medicine in Cricket
Bridgetown, Barbados 4-7 April 2007
Building on the successes and experience of the previous congresses held at Lilleshall
National Sports Centre, England in 1999 and at the Spier Wine Estate, Cape Town,
South Africa in 2003 the meeting was a major international event involving participants
from the major cricket playing nations.
The Congress was hosted immediately prior to the ‘Super 8’ Series of matches of the
Cricket World Cup . Sport scientists, physiologists, academics, students, administrators
and coaches with an interest in cricket took the opportunity to participate in this meeting.
The majority of the delegates also attended the Opening Ceremony for the World Cup.
The full range of current issues was represented in the Congress programme in order to
increase the awareness and understanding of the game, thus raising the standards of
support provided to cricketers around the world. A feature was the keynote lecture
sponsored by WCSS delivered by Mark Williams and was focused on motor skills
learning in cricket.
The aim of the Congress was to:

• provide a state of the art review of the basic, applied and clinical sciences as they relate

to cricket and the impact of cricket on society.

• provide a forum for integrating knowledge from the contributing sciences which address

key areas in the prevention and management of injuries in cricket

• identify those areas where our understanding is incomplete and encourage discussions
of the challenges that face all involved in the advancement of the game of cricket.

• provide a forum for the dissemination of scientific information relating to cricket.

The Congress was sponsored by Pfizer Inc. Dr. Llewellyn Harper is Chairman of the
Congress Organizing Committee. A special thanks goes to him and his hard working
team for making the Congress a memorable event.
